The Dorothy Renfro Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 by the family of Dorothy Renfro, a devoted Pony Club volunteer who gave her time and energy tirelessly to help young people to grow and develop through their love of horses. She was widely known as a dedicated advocate for children, having served as Regional Supervisor of Old Dominion Region, Chairman of the USPC Summer Instruction Committee, a member of the USPC Board of Governors, and, at the time of her death, a member of the USPC Advisory committee.
Purpose
To reward in Pony Clubbers the qualities that Dorothy Renfro valued most: leadership, horse management, and volunteering time, energy to beneficial activities, and to encourage horsemen and women in their academic pursuits. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually.
Qualifications
Recipient shall be an active Pony Clubber currently enrolled in (or been accepted to) an institution of higher education who demonstrates the qualities that were important to Dorothy Renfro: Leadership, horse management, and volunteering time and energy.
Application
1. Applicant must complete the application form to be obtained from the USPC National Office. The completed form must be delivered to the USPC office by March 31st. No faxed copies will be accepted.
2. Applicant must submit a letter from his/her school verifying that (s)he has been accepted to, or is enrolled full-time at an institution of higher education (this may include university, college, community college, technical or vocational school) at the time of application.
3. Applicant must submit a current transcript with an overall average of at least C from the institution (or from high school, if applicant is a high school senior).
4. Applicant must submit at least two letters of recommendation, of which one must be from the District Commissioner or Regional Supervisor of the Pony Club where (s)he is a member.
5. Recipient may re-apply for a second consecutive one-year scholarship after receiving the first award by submitting a letter to the scholarship committee along with a transcript showing that recipient has maintained the qualifying GPA. Recipient may receive no more than two consecutive scholarships
Selection
Recipient(s) are selected by the USPC Scholarship Committee (as named by USPC) and announced by June 30 through the USPC Development Office.
Disbursements
Disbursements are made directly to the college which the recipients attends and designated for the benefit of that student only.
